Daytripping. Saturday we went to St. Albans, just north of London. Saw the cathedral and the ruins of a Roman theatre - which took a lot of imagination to visualize as more than a pile of rubble. A nice trip, and the English countryside is quite beautiful this time of year, with its rolling hills of various shades of green.
Sunday we went to Salisbury Cathedral. Big church, has the best preserved copy of the Magna Carta. It looked almost too pristine for an 800 year old document. Yukiko practiced her singing in the choir, her squeals amplified by the walls and ceilings.
And then... STONEHENGE!! I've read that Stonehenge can be disappointing, small and overpriced. But I beg to differ. As Yoshie can attest, I gushed ecstatically when the stones suddenly came into view as we drove towards them. Although we couldn't get close enough to touch them, I was still impressed. Another lifelong dream realized. We then went to Avebury to see another, larger stone circle that was supposed to be more impressive (and you can touch them, if you don't mind stepping in sheep-doo) but I still preferred Stonehenge.
Today is a day of rest, and house cleaning. Back to normality.
